Skin doctors foresee huge workload as monsoon approaches fast
Karachi, June 07, 2011 (PPI): Monsoon rains would bring a sharp rise in skin disease cases. Almost 30percent jump is recorded in skin aliment cases during summer and monsoon season. People should take special care of their personal hygiene in hot and rainy weather to avoid bothering skin problems, say experts.
Dr Anees Ahmed Memon, senior medical officer at the Sindh Institute of Skin Diseases said during summer and especially in rainy season, the cases of skin diseases always escalate. He suggested people should keep themselves tidy and clean and take fresh food in order to protect themselves against from diseases. He said the skin patients should keep avoid closer contact with other people as they could transmit the disease.
Dr Memon said though the cases of skin diseases are reported round the year but their ratio significantly increases in summer due to excessive sweating, rising skin temperature and such other factors. In order to control skin diseases, affected people must apply ointment, on prescription of medical experts, on the affected area, besides use prescribed medicine regularly.
He further said that itching is a perturbing skin disease that could spread from one person to the whole family. He added this disease could be controlled within a few days if preventive measures are properly followed.
Dr. Qamar Abbass, also of Sindh Institute of Skin Diseases, said that daily his hospital is visited by more than 2000 patients of itching, miliaria rubra and other diseases. He said this figure jumps to 3000 patients a day in hot summer and rainy season. He said that diagnosis of all skin diseases and facilities for treatment are provided free of cost to all patients at his hospital.
Assistant Professor Behram Khan at the Department of Skin Diseases, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) Hospital said that during summers the cases of skin diseases at his hospital rise by about 15percent. One of the main reasons of skin diseases is excessive sweating and unhygienic living style. He added that this summer more cases of fungal and bacterial infection were also being reported.
He said people having pimples on their faces must give immediate attention to their condition and do not try to touch or squeeze these pimples otherwise their skin might be affected.
Prof Khan stated that daily more than 250 patients suffering from skin diseases are reported in OPD of his hospital. Those in critical condition are admitted in the hospital for free treatment.
Dr. Samreen Akbar, of the Department of Skin diseases at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH) said that during summers people should keep themselves clean. They should wash hands and face before and after meals in order to prevent themselves against skin ailments and other diseases. She also said that patients suffering from skin diseases should take precautions besides complete treatment.
Dr. Akbar said that OPD of her hospital received more than 150 patients daily. She feared that during the coming monsoon rains sharp rise in skin disease cases could be witnessed.

He suggested patients suffering from skin diseases should avoid eating more meat dishes and instead take more fresh vegetables, fruits and cereals in their daily diet. He further said that some 70 cases of skin diseases are reported on daily basis at his hospital and the trend is on the rise.
Dr Saleem Akhtar Sheikh, In-charge of department of skin diseases at Sindh Government hospital New Karachi said that during summers the oiliness of skin increases due to which more pimples appear on the face. He said treatment of this condition is possible, mostly through precautionary measures.
“In my hospital, more than 200 patients of skin diseases visit daily but in summer these cases often increase,” added he.
He informed that the patients who come to his hospital generally belong to poor families and they are provided all medical facilities free of cost.
He also said that a few days before his hospital set up a free skin camp in Madrasa Draul Aloom Naemia and examined more than 200 students and gave them medicine free of cost.
