KOREAN ICT FIRMS EYE TIE-UPS WITH LOCAL INVESTORS

By Nurul Jannah Kamaruddin

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- A delegation from the Korean Association of Information and Telecommunication (KAIT) is in town to explore potential business opportunities with local information and communications technology (ICT) investors.

KAIT president, Dr Lee Kyo Yong, said the two-day Malaysia-Korea ICT
Mission 2008 was interested in sectors like fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), Internet
protocol television (IPTV) as well as terrestrial digital multimedia
broadcasting (T-DMB).

"Our companies are also keen to pursue partnerships in sectors like radio
frequency identification device, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave
Access, mobile content, Internet security, online gaming and technology for
light-emitting diodes," he told Bernama in an interview here
Tuesday.

Over 20 South Korean companies will meet about 50 Malaysian counterparts at
a two-day business-matching session starting Tuesday.

Lee said most of the Korean companies were small and medium enterprises but
they were all major players in the country's ICT market.

He said that Malaysia offered a potential market for FTTH and portal
services.

"Some of the members of the delegation are device manufacturers and they
hope to expand their market for IPTV here," he said.

Lee said South Korea was one of the world leaders in T-DMB such as TV on
mobile devices, which was popular in the country.

"We aim to enhance cooperation in different fields of ICT between Malaysia
and South Korea," he said.

He said Malaysia was an important partner for South Korea, especially in
gaining market access into the markets in Association of South-East Asian
Nations and Middle East.

"Malaysia is a big country and has the potential to grow in the ICT area,
especially with the Malaysian government's plan to develop the ICT industry to
make the country a world hub," he said.

On the business-matching programme, he expected 16 partnership deals this
year compared with eight during the last mission in 2004.

Among the Malaysian companies participating in the programme are TM Net,
TIME Engineering, Niaga News, Green Packet, SyQic, TPF Solutions, MOL Access
Portal and K Perak.
