ASEAN Police conference closed in Laos
VIENTIANE JUNE.(KPL) - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Chiefs of Police (ASEANAPOL) Conference took place in Vientiane , Laos from May 31-June 2.
Attending the event were representatives from ASEAN member countries and their dialogue partners, namely Australia, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK) and New Zealand as well as representatives from the International Criminal Police Organisation (ICPO-Interpol), the ASEAN Secretariat and the ASEANAPOL Secretariat.
This year’s conference aimed to enhance the profession of policing, promote security cooperation in the region and strengthen friendship between police officers of the countries.
The three-day meeting discussed issues on the prevention and fight against transnational crime including terrorism, drugs and human trafficking, arms smuggling, maritime fraud, commercial crime, banking offences and credit card fraud, fraudulent documents and transnational fraud.
Participants also deliberated to update the electronic database system of ASEANAPOL and take measures to increase mutual assistance on criminal matters.
The ASEAN 10-member bloc groups Indonesia , Malaysia , the Philippines , Singapore , Thailand , Brunei , Vietnam , Laos , Myanmar and Cambodia .
ASEANAPOL began in 1981 with the aim of strengthening ASEAN member police organisations, exchanging information between agencies and law enforcement cooperation.
