Preparation discussed for Dengue Fever day
VIENTIANE JUNE.(KPL) - Journalists, academics and representatives of the Hygiene and Prevention Department and the Ministries of Education and Information and Culture and relevant bodies met yesterday to discuss the preparation for publication of ASEAN Day of Dengue Fever (June 15) and preventive and control measures.
Between 1998 and 2010, dengue fever outbreak has been recorded in twelve provinces nationwide excluding Huaphanh, Siengkhouang, Phongsaly, Borkeo and Luangnamtha.
Four serotypes of dengue fever virus have been identified in Laos namely DEN-1, 2, 3 and 4. 2010 saw the most severe outbreak of dengue fever with 22, 972 people infected and 46 dead. In 2003, 17,628 people were reportedly infected with the mosquito borne disease and 63 people dying of the disease.
More than 2.5 billion people across the world are prone to dengue fever annually. “In the Lao PDR, prior to 2010 only rainy season saw the outbreak of dengue fever but now the disease outbreak is recorded every season,” said Dr. Bounelay.
Asean Day of Dengue Fever was announced by Asean health ministers at a two-day meeting in Singapore. The initiative is to promote community participation in controlling dengue fever through destroying breeding habitats of mosquitoes.
