Minister urges effective management of forest resources
VIENTIANE JUNE.(KPL) - Mrs. Khempheng Pholsena, Minister to Prime Minister’s Office and Director of the Water Resources and Environment Authority has urged the participants of a seminar on forestry and environment to effectively manage and use forest resources.
The seminar was held yesterday in Vientiane Capital. Present at the event were Mr. Ty Phommasak, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, representatives of international organizations and foreign companies and relevant bodies.
Over the last decades, the national forest coverage has been decreased by 53,000 ha annually and the current percentage of forest coverage is 41.5.
Mrs. Khempheng attributes the decrease in forest coverage in Laos to improper management of forest resources exploitation, logging, and slash-and-burn cultivation practices.
The government has paid attention to the reforestation and protection of forest resources by setting up policies and legal instruments on sustainable protection and management of forestry with the participation of the people to increase forest coverage to 65 per cent by 2015 and 70 per cent by 2020.
