Laos urges more ASEAN efforts in talking transnational crimes

VIENTIANE,MAY.(KPL) - Transnational crimes are continuously threatening political stability, economic stability and cultural development in the region and the world while the solution is not a single responsibility of any particular government but it is necessary for ASEAN to strengthen cooperation on efforts in tackling transnational crimes. The statement was made by Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security Thongbanh Sengaphone as chair of the 31st ASEAN Chiefs of Police (ASEANAPOL) Conference held in Vientiane Capital yesterday.
“The 31st ASEANAPOL Conference is held in a time where the region and international community are facing challenges namely the global economic crisis, natural disasters, climate change, the outbreak of deadly diseases. At the same time transnational crimes and terrorism are severely threatening the stability in the region and international community,” said Mr. Thongbanh.
“I consider this meeting as a landmark reaffirming our unanimous commitment to efforts in tackling transnational crimes and terrorism, hence contributing to the peace and social orderliness and development,” said Mr. Thongbanh.
He said that the transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, terrorism, human trafficking, transnational corruption, cyber crime and arms trafficking had become organizational and challenged law enforcement of authorities.
The 30th ASEANAPOL Conference was held in Cambodia where representatives of the ten member states discussed preventive measures against transnational crimes.
