International Year of the Forests 2011 marked
VIENTIANE,MAY.(KPL) - The United Nations and Lao Government have celebrated the International Year of Forests 2011 regarding as a year of globally important for the forest management and protection in the Lao PDR.
The inaugural ceremony for the celebration of International Year of Forests 2011 was held at the Lao-ITECC in Vientiane on 20 May.
The celebration of International Year of Forests 2011in the Lao PDR is set forth within the global objectives on forest framework, said Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr. Sitaheng Lasaphol.
He said that the forth targets including (1) reverse the loss of forest cover worldwide through sustainable forest management, including protection, restoration, afforestation and reforestation, and increase effort to prevent forest degradation, (2) enhance forest-based economic, social and environmental benefit, including by improving the livelihood of forest dependent people, (3) increase significantly the area of protected forests worldwide and other areas of sustainable managed forests, as well as the proportion forest products from sustainable managed forests and (4) reverse the decline in official development assistance for sustainable forest management and mobilize significantly increased, new and additional financial resources from all sources, for the implementation of sustainable forest management.
In the past, the Lao PDR, as a UN member and party to numerous international conventions related to global environment, in particular UNFCCC, UNCBD, UNCCD and RAMSAR, has been actively fulfilling its international obligations, specially counteracting measures against global warming through effort directed towards increasing forest cover, enrichment of forest resources and non-timber forest products by participatory sustainable Management Practices, said Mr. Sitaheng.
He added that the targets of the International Year of Forests 2011 celebrating giving priority to the rural people who are the majority and whose livelihood is closely linked to forest, are the local point in forest management aiming at promoting sustainable livelihood and poverty eradication which are perfectly in line with the forestry sector development direction and policy of our country.
Lao PDR is known to be one of the forest-enriched countries inhabited by diverse of flora and fauna species, including endemic species unique to high altitude ecosystem.
Lao PDR forests are habitats for more than 8,100 flowering plant species, more than 100 species of big sized mammals, 166 species of reptiles and amphibians, 90 species of bats, more than 700 species of birds which more than half live in lower Mekong sub-region.
He also said the IX resolution of the Lao People Revolutionary Party endorsed some important focal tasks and development directions for the next five years 2011-2015 placing special importance on the management of these natural forests to achieve sustainable and equitable green development so as to build the strong solid foundation for environment protection, addressing global warming, protection of watersheds for hydropower and irrigation development, and for other national socio-economic development such as: integrated agricultural development, stable food security and self mastered economic integration in the region and the world.
The announcement of the international year of forest 2011will continue with the mobilization of concerted effort in the protection and management of existing forests from deforestation and degradation, focusing on greening up empty areas, promoting agro forestry on agriculture land and other forest use types with the overall target for forests cover increase up to 65% in 2015 and 70% in 2020.
