Nineveh province, Turkey agree on opening border point

Mosul (NINA) - An official source in Nineveh province announced on Saturday an agreement with Turkey on creating a joint border point.

The source said in a statement to NINA "the establishment of the border point came during a visit by the Nineveh Governor, Atheel Al Nujeifi, and officials in the province to Turkey and their meeting with Turkish President Abdullah Gul. An agreement was reached with the Turkish side on the opening of the border point linking Nineveh with Turkey in order to activate the Turkish companies’ role and expand economic, tourism and trade fields between the province and Turkey."

The source added "the establishment of the border point would be starting during the coming days, as the legal approvals were issued."

The source noted that Gul welcomed the request of the delegation, and stressed the desire for cooperation to promote bilateral relations in the tourism, economy, and particularly trade sector, reiterating the interest of Turkey in developing relations with major provinces in Iraq, especially Baghdad and Nineveh.

Iraq and Turkey have one border point, Ibrahim Al Khaleel, in Zakho, Dohuk province.
