10th meeting of the GMS Working Group held in Vientiane

VIENTIANE.MAY.(KPL) -) Lao government yesterday hosted the 10th meeting of the GMS Working Group on Human Resource Development to assess the implementation of the Strategic Framework and Action Plan for Human Resource Development in the GMS (2009-2012).
A two-day meeting held in Vientiane by the Lao PDR’s Water Resources and Environment Administration, GMS National Secretariat and was co-chaired by Deputy Director General of GMS National Secretariat, Mr. Chanthachith Amphaichith and Director, Human and Social Development Division, Southeast Asia Department, Asian Development Bank, Ms. Ikuko Matsumoto.
It was participated by the Six GMS countries including Lao PDR, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, China and Vietnam. Development partners involved in subregional HRD cooperation are also joining the discussions.
During the meeting, GMS countries have assessed the implementation of the Strategic Framework and Action Plan for Human Resource Development in the GMS (2009-2012) and identify emerging HRD challenges and priorities for inclusion in the GMS Strategic Framework 2012-2022.
The meeting has also served as springboard for exchange of insights and recommendations from the Working Group and its development partners on possible new strategic directions for subregional HRD cooperation during the next decade. These insights will serve as guideposts to steer the strategic focus of subregional HRD cooperation over the coming decade.
In addition, it also served as a forum for discussing a wide range of HRD issues and concerns of common interest.
Strategic issues identified at the WGHRD (GMS Working Group on Human Resource Development) level will be elevated to the upcoming senior Officials’ Meetings, 17th GMS Ministerial Conference, and 4th GMS Summit.
Subregional cooperation in Human Resource Development is one of the strategic thrusts of the Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program.
The WGHRD was established in 1995 and involves all GMS countries. Participants to WGHRD meetings comprise government officials from GMS countries that are in charge of education, labour and migration, health, and social development, including HIV/AIDS prevention, development partners and academic and research institutions.
