Foreign Investment Survey in Qatar 2009

Doha, May 09 (QNA)- Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) has conducted for the first time the foreign direct investment survey relating to the year 2008 and 2009 as per international guidelines. The survey has covered all economic activities in the country to identify the contribution of foreign investment in Qatar s economy. However, it includes the investment of Qatari private sector only.
QSA would like to seize this opportunity to extend special thanks to all the private establishments in Qatar who contributed to the success of this survey.
In macroeconomics, foreign investments not only enhance investment and fill the gap between domestic savings and the size of investment required to reach economic objectives but also allow the transfer of advanced technologies to the target countries. Foreign investments stimulate competition in local markets and contribute to the development of human capital in the host country like training of employees who operate new business projects. In addition, foreign investment leads to the progress of Balance of Payment due to the fund inflow, increase of exports and decrease of imports.
The major findings of 2009 FDI survey is as follows:
The total foreign investment in the State of Qatar has increased by 36.4% in 2009, reaching 171.4 billion Qatar Riyals (47.9% of GDP) as against the corresponding figure of 125.6 billion Qatar Riyals (31.2% of GDP) in 2008;
The position of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country at QR 94.3 billion in 2009 shows a growth of 45.7% when compared to the corresponding position at QR 64.7 billion in 2008.
Despite the decline of liquidity in global markets in 2009 due to recession in the world economy, Qatar has succeeded in attracting foreign investment flows by QR 45.7 billion during the year. Of the total foreign investment flow during the year, the foreign direct investment was QR 29.6 billion;
Though foreign direct investment targeted various economic activities, five major economic sectors accounted for 93.9% of the Qatar s total foreign direct inward investment by end of December of 2009
