Media urged to participate in anti-smoking activities
VIENTIANE,MAY (KPL) - The Southeast Asia Tobacco Control Alliance (SEATCA) in cooperation with the Ministry of Health yesterday held a meeting in Vientiane on the enforcement of law on tobacco and Prime Ministerial decree on banning the advertisement of cigarettes for media practitioners.
“To ensure public understanding of the danger of cigarettes it require the media to provide them right message on the danger of the cigarette and ensure law enforcement in the media sector,” said Director of the Mass Media Department, Mr. Pinpatthana Phanthamaly.
According to a 2005 research, 1.5 million or 40 per cent of people aged over 18 are smokers. Among the men, 67 per cent smoke and five per cent of students aged between 13-15 years old smoke and they smoke because of peer recommendations.
Most smokers in the Lao PDR say they begin smoking when they are teenage and very small number of the smoker begins smoking when they are mid-aged.
Cigarette producers put a lot of money in advertising their products to persuade new consumers to replace the patrons who fall ill and dye of smoking on daily basis.
