EDL forecasts decreased import of electricity after 2013
VIENTIANE,MAY (KPL) - The Electricité du Lao (EDL) has forecasted that the electricity import would be decreased after 2013.
“Although our country has quantitatively increased hydropower plants but the supply of electricity doesn’t meet demand in the country,” said EDL Director Khammany Inthalat.
Mr. Khammany said that Laos had high voltage power grid of over 2,970 km, a medium voltage one of 15,771 km and a low voltage power line of 12,955 km.
There are 33 power substations operational across the country, which provide power to 782,500 families in 141 districts. The figure of electricity consumers is equivalent to 72.67 % of entire population in the country, according to Mr. Khammany.
The number of power plants has increased from 9 in 2006 to 14 last year. Meanwhile, the nationwide installed generation capacity has increased from 680 MW four years ago to 2,558 MW last year.
“In the next few years, the EDL will focus on increasing electricity production and ensuring enough provision of electricity and having 80% of households access to electricity by 2015 as well as increasing the export of electricity,” said Mr. Khammany.
