Pakistan elected member of three important UN bodies

ISLAMABAD, April 29, 2011 (PPI): The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at its resumed session elected Pakistan for the membership of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for the term (2012-15), Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) for the sessions 21-23 and the Committee on Programme and Coordination for the term 2012-14. Election to these three important UN bodies is a manifestation of the recognition by the UN Member States on Pakistan’s contribution to the work of the United Nations.

The Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) serves as the governing body of the fund of the UN international Drug Control Programme (UNDCP). It provides legislative overview and policy guidance on international drug control matters to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The Commission also has the responsibility to analyze the world drug situation and develop proposals to strengthen international drug control.

The Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) is the high-level forum for sustainable development within the UN system. It reviews progress in the implementation of Agenda 21 and the Rio Declaration, as well as provides policy guidance to follow up with the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) adopted at the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in 2002.

The Commission also reviews the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the contest of its multi-year work programme.

The Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) is charged with reviewing the activities of UN agencies on a sectoral basis and recommend guidelines for them, taking into account the need for coherence and coordination. It also carries out the periodic reviews of the implementation of important legislative decisions.
