Laos, Vietnam push ahead with border demarcation

VIENTIANE,APRIL (KPL) - Lao and Vietnamese officials met in Vietnam from April 18-21 to discuss the progress of border demarcation between the two countries to ensure all work is running smoothly and in accordance with the set plan.
Lao National Border Committee Office Head Mr Phoukhao Phommavong led a Lao delegation to the meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart, with both sides expressing their appreciation for the work done by border demarcation units at the provincial level of the two countries. The meeting was conducted in an atmosphere of friendship, special relations and mutual understanding, reflecting the fine traditions of the two Parties, governments and peoples of Laos and Vietnam.
Since the start of the project in 2008, both countries have defined 490 sites for marker planting and planted 519 markers.
Since November 2010, the two nations have defined 111 sites and planted 117 markers .
These achievements reflect the progress of border demarcation, with the two sides reaffirming they will push forward to ensure steady progress from now until the end of the year.
Laos and Vietnam have a shared border of more than 2,000km running from north to south.
The two nations have confirmed their intention to complete additional border demarcation in 2014.
The project aims to install more than 800 border markers on the common border of Laos and Vietnam to clearly define their shared border and create a border of peace, friendship and cooperation, contributing to the socio-economic development of the two countries.
