Media oriented for malaria and dengue coverage
VIENTIANE,APRIL (KPL) - Ministry of Health held an orientation workshop for the media practitioners to ensure they can send right message on dengue fever and malaria to the public, mostly people at risk of falling victim of the disease, on April 28 in Vientiane Capital.
The opening ceremony of the event saw the presence of Director of Vientiane Health Service, Dr. Sengthong Vilakoun, Deputy Office Head of Ministry of Information and Culture, Mr. Vayolin Phrasavath, Office Head of (AED) Academy for Educational Development Mr. Anton Steiner and relevant officials.
In the Lao PDR, the first case of dengue fever victim was reported in 1977. The disease became a challenge for the health ministry in 1983 and four years later the disease outbreak were reported in eight populous provinces of the country. Prior to 2006, the number of people infected with the disease had been increased on annual basis.
In 2006, the infection rate of the disease in the eight provinces reached 96.9 cases/100,000 persons, according to Dr. Phonepaseuth.
“Last year, 19,743 cases of dengue fever were reported along with 43 people dying of the disease across the nation.”
On the same day, AED Office Head Anton Steiner provided posters and booklets advertising anti-dengue fever activities worth 18 million kip to representative of the Ministry of Heath.
