Laos, China sign agreement on hydropower development project

VIENTIANE,APRIL 21.(KPL) -The Electricité du Lao, Sino Hydropower Project and China Development Bank on Wednesday signed an agreement on developing a hydropower plant on the Ou River which is 475 km-long stretching through Phongsaly and Luang Prabang.
Signatories to the agreement were Deputy General Manager of Electricité du Lao Savath Phomlavanh, Deputy Director of the Sinohydro Corporation Limited Executive Vice-President Shen De Cai, and Deputy Director of the China Development Bank in Yunna Zhong Shujun.
Minister of Energy and Mining Soulivong Dalavong, Chinese Ambassador to Laos Bu Jiangua and relevant officials of both sides witnessed the event.
Under the MoU, the USD 2-billion hydropower development project will be financed by the China Development Bank.
The plant will be equipped with an installed generation capacity of 1,156 mw and it is expected to be able to generate five billion kwh yearly.
Once the build-operate-transfer (BOT) project is completed more people in northern Laos will gain an access to electricity.
