PRESIDENT TO SIGN DECREE ON EXPANSION OF PPA'S TASKS

Jakarta, Sept 1 (ANTARA) - State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Djalil said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would soon sign a government regulation (PP) to enhance the expansion of the state's Asset Management Company (PPA) this week.
"The ministers of state enterprises and of law and human rights have put their initials on the PP's draft. So, we hope the president will sign it tomorrow or the day after tomorrow," Djalil said here on Monday.
The minister said he PP would basically enhance the PPA's authority and contained a provision on increasing the PPA's capital so that based on its new duties, PPA will be able to restructure state-owned companies (BUMNs).
PPA is a body set up to replace and take over the tasks of the defunct National Bank Restructuring Agency (BPPN).
"So instead of the closure of the PPA, the regulation will extend its existence and enhance its authority, namely to manage assets previously under the management of BPPN and to restructure BUMNs. It will also manage non-core BUMN assets or minor BUMN assets," the minister added.
He said the assets now managed by PPA were government assets under the care of the finance minister.
"The PPA's management will also be maintained temporoarily," the minister said.
Previously rumors had it that in order to carry out its new job of restructuring non-peforming BUMNs, PPA would be injected with funds totaling Rp1.5 trillion.
"Yes, some Rp350 billion of the funds will be used to help PT Merpati," the minister said when a reporter asked for confirmation of the rumor.
Records show that PPA's transfer to the state budget during the period of 2004-2007 reached Rp15.76 trillion. It far exceeded the target set in the government's long-term plan which stood at Rp7.51 trillion.
During the period, PPA was also able to book a profit of Rp1.258 trillion. Of the amount, Rp843.35 billion was contributed to the state budget in the form of dividends.
