Phu Bia Mining’s community development efforts lead the way in southern Asia

VIENTIANE,APRIL 19.(KPL) - Phu Bia Mining (PBM) has been awarded the Best Community Development Initiative in the Southeast Asia category of the Global Mining Sustainability Awards Dinner at the 2011 Asia Mining Congress. The Award recognised the Company’s technical trades training program and the contribution it makes to local communities.
Rob Usher, Executive General Manager, accepted the Award on the PBM’s behalf, at a ceremony in Singapore on 6 April. “I am proud of this Award and the strong contribution Phu Bia Mining makes to the communities in which it operates”, Mr Usher said at the Awards Dinner.
The program, managed by PBM’s Organisational Development team, delivers Lao-recognised qualifications in trades such as welding and fabrication, automotive mechanical, automotive electrical, electrical fitting, heavy mechanical engineering and mechanical fitting. This is the second year running that PBM has won the award. In 2010, the Company’s Livelihood Improvement Program was recognised.
“Winning this Award for the second year running is a credit not only to the Phu Bia Mining’s strong commitment to sustainability, but also to our neighbouring communities. Their support is critical to the Company’s success”, noted Mr Usher.
