FOREIGN MINISTRY FAMILIARIZING NTB AUTHORITIES WITH RULES ON INT'L COOPERATION

Mataram, W Nusa Tenggara, Aug 30 (ANTARA) - A team of Foreign Ministry officials is in West Nusatenggara (NTB) with the special purpose of familiarizing regional authorities with various rules on and mechanisms for cooperation with foreign parties, a local government official said.
The foreign ministry team was carrying out its mission in sessions with provincial administration officials in the Senggigi resort area in West Lombok district, Imam Maliki, head of general affairs at the NTB provincial administration's secretaiat, said here Saturday.
He said it was important for local officials to have proper knowledge about consular matters and foreign cooperation.
Autonomous regions had been given the chance to manage and run their own regional affairs, including interaction with foreigners or overseas partners, he said.
After all, the current era of globalization required regions to engage in international cooperation, Maliki said.
"This familiarization program is also a momentum for local officials to consult the foreign ministry on problems that might emerge in cooperation with foreign partners," he added.
He said local authorities often faced problems involving foreigners which could affect international relations, such as abuse of passports and tourist stay permits.
"When local officials have sufficient kwowledge and understanding about consular matters, there can be smoother cooperation between the central government and the regional administration," he added.***8***
