RED-LIGHT DISTRICT IN BALIKPAPAN CLOSED DURING RAMADHAN FASTING MONTH
Balikpapan, E Kalimantan, Aug 30 (ANTARA)- A red-light district called "Kilometer 17" here will be closed during the Ramadhan fasting month which is expected to fall on September 1, 2008, and 50 of its 300 prostitutes will attend a cake-making course during the period.
"We will also partcipate in Islamic propagation activities in a mosque near our location," said Saturiyanto, the manager of one of the borthels in the complex here on Saturday.
He said the Balikpapan city administration had issued a circular banning nightspots including brothels from conducting their activities in the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan 1429-H (2008).
It will be the fifth time for the city's People's Empowerment Office (KPM) in cooperation with the local religious affairs office to conduct a training course for prostitutes during Ramadhan.
