RI-MALAYSIAN EPG : MUTUAL MISPERCEPTIONS ROOT OF BILATERAL CONFLICTS

Jakarta, Aug. 30 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian-Malaysian Eminent Persons Group (EPG) has concluded that conflicts occurring between the two countries are due to mutual misperceptions and misunderstandings , an EPG spokesman said.

"Actually, (the root of the problem) is misperception but it's also because of differences in situation as Malaysia is probably heading toward a better economy," Musni Umar, an EPG member from Indonesia, said following an Indonesian-Malaysian EPG meeting here on Friday.

In the short term, the misperceptions would complicate relations between the two peoples, and in the long term, they would cause the gaps in the two countries' relations to widen, he said.
He said the media played a significant role in solving or triggering a misperception between the two peoples.
The EPG meeting was attended by seven Indonesian EPG members, namely Try Sutrisno, Ali Alatas, Quraish Shihab, Des Alwi, Musni Umar, Pudentia MPSS, and Wahyuni Bahar.
Meanwhile, Malaysian EPG members were Tun Musa Hitam, Tan Sri Dato Seri Mohd Zahidi Haji Zainuddin, Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim, Tan Sri Abdul Halim Ali, Tan Sri Amar Haji Hamid Bugo, Datuk Syed Ali Tawfik Al-Attas, and Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
The Indonesian-Malaysian EPG was set up on July 7, 2008, at the initiative of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at their meeting on January 11, 2008.
The EPG meeting discussed among other things efforts to strengthen people-to-people relationships, issues around mutual misperceptions and a perceived generation gap.
