ASEAN countries fully recognize tremendous potential of Pakistan, says Indonesian envoy

Islamabad, April 07, 2011 (PPI): Ambassador of Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Ishak Latuconsina has said that the ASEAN countries fully recognise the tremendous potential of Pakistan and equally desire to enhance and strengthen the cordial ties with Pakistan and appreciate Pakistan’s “Vision East Asia” policy which reflects its strong desire for comprehensive durable and mutually beneficial relations with countries in East Asia.

He stated this while addressing a seminar on ‘ASEAN-Pakistan future relations: opportunities and challenges” organized by The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia here Thursday.

in his keynote address, Indonesian Ambassador stressed the need to gain maximum benefits of this conducive situation for investment, economic cooperation and public private partnerships. Towards this end, necessary support can be provided by the respective governments of ASEAN states by signing the Free Trade Agreements (FTA), Preferential Trade Agreement individually and collectively, he said.

Ms. Hina Rabbani Khan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in her inaugural address highlighted that Pakistan is a member of ASEAN Regional Forum, acceded to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, endorsed the Third Protocol Amending TAC, signed Joint Declaration to Combat Terrorism and convened four rounds of ASEAN-Pakistan joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee meetings.

She said the emerging security and economic architecture in the region is of paramount importance to Pakistan’s foreign policy objectives. She highlighted the need for Pakistan to look at some of the aspects which have prevented Pakistan to fully achieve its objectives particularly becoming a full dialogue partner with ASEAN and a vibrant participant in the growing economies of the region. She stressed the need for people to people contacts and intellectual interaction between experts and eminent persons in the region to come up with better solutions for the problems and challenges confronting the region.

Earlier, Ambassador Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, Director General, Institute of Strategic Studies in his opening remarks said that for Pakistan the ASEAN region was important in the past and is more important today and will always be strategic to our economic and political interests in the future.

Mian Waqas Masood, Director, Confederation of Asia-Pacific Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Islamabad highlighted the many possible avenues of cooperation for Pak-ASEAN which includes, liberal visa policy, sharing of expertise in energy sector, Agriculture and infrastructure development, Tourism, education and technology, industrial development and export of surgical items.

Ambassador Edi Haryadh, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic on Indonesia, gave a detailed background of ASEAN Charter and Community Blueprint. He said that the ASEAN is a rule based and people oriented organization whose principle focus is cooperation, mutual respect and non-interference. Ambassador elaborated blueprints of three pillars of ASEAN Community i.e. ASEAN Economic Community, ASEAN Socio-Cultural community and ASEAN Political Security Community.

Mr. Jamshaid Iftikhar DG EAP, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Islamabad, underlined a brief historical account of Pak-ASEAN engagement. He pointed out that Pakistan has played a very positive role at the ASEAN-Pakistan joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee (APJSCC), ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM). Mr. Iftikhar identified that Pakistan has not been able to fully optimize its relations in the fields of banking, consultancies and training, counter terrorism, control of drugs and narcotics, transnational crimes, agriculture, dairy and livestock.

Dr. Hariyadi Wirawan, head of department of International Relations, Indonesia University, Jakarta stressed on serious and concrete efforts to improve Pak-ASEAN relations. He further highlighted the recent and ongoing cooperation between ASEAN and Pakistan, he stressed that Pakistan should do more to increase this engagement. In this regard Indonesia can help Pakistan by becoming a bridge to enhance cooperation between Pakistan and ASEAN countries in almost all fields.

Mr Fazal ur Rahman, Director, Asia pacific region, Institute of Strategic Studies elucidated an insightful overview of “Pakistan’s ‘Vision East Asia’. He said that Pakistan launched its ‘Vision East Asia’ initiative in October 2003, and as a result, Pakistan became an active participant in the ASEAN affairs and was accepted as 24th member of ASEAN regional forum.

In the end, Ambassador of Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Ishak Latuconsina presented a shield to the Ambassador Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, DG, ISSI and to the speakers of the seminar.
