Pak says it has clear strategy to deal with the menace of terrorism

Islamabad, April 07, 2011 (PPI): Pakistan Thursday said it has a clear strategy solely based on its national interests to deal with the menace of terrorism adding it doesn’t share the assessment of Washington. Reacting on the US displeasure over Pakistan’s anti terrorism efforts in a report presented to the US congress, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tehmina Janjua during the weekly press briefing here emphatically stated that Pakistan does not share the assessment of Washington.

She said that we have our own assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the strategy being followed by the US and the ISAF vis-e-vis counter terrorism and peace and security in Afghanistan.

She said that Pakistan should not be held accountable for the failures of the strategy in Afghanistan.

Tehmina Janjua pointed out that Pakistan has rendered more sacrifices as compared to any other country of the world. She emphasized the need for engagement between Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States to address the common challenges.

When asked about the current status of Pak-US bilateral relations, the spokesperson said that both the countries are trying to build a relationship based on mutual respect and interest.

About Pakistan-India engagement, Tehmina Janjua said that the process between the two countries is moving ahead. She said that commerce secretaries of both the countries will meet in Islamabad on 27th and 28th of April.

She expressed the confidence that these talks will be imbued by a spirit of enlightened national interests on both sides. She said that Pakistan attaches considerable importance to the dialogue process and dates for the meeting on Sir Creek are expected to be finalized soon.

When asked about the situation in Libya and Bahrain, the spokesman said that Pakistani mission in Bahrain is in constant touch with the Pakistanis to facilitate the community in every possible manner. Similarly, she said that missions in Cairo and Tunisia have been instructed to extend every possible facilitation to the Pakistanis fleeing Libya.
