U.S. provides pandemic influenza planning workshop to provincial military and civilian officials
VIENTIANE,APRIL 6.(KPL)- The U.S. Embassy, U.S. Pacific Command and the Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance (COE), in a collaborative effort with the National Emerging Infectious Disease Coordinating Office (NEIDCO), the Ministry of Health, and Champasak province, sponsored a Pandemic Influenza Civil-Military Planning Workshop in Pakse on April 4-7, 2011.
The workshop was held for military and civilian planners and decision makers at national, provincial and district levels whose responsibilities would include Pandemic Influenza Response. The opening ceremony was attended by Mr. Bounphong Divisay, Vice-Governor of Champasak Province; Dr. Mahanakhone Suriya, Deputy Director of NEIDCO; Col. Dr. Bounteuan Bandavong, Director of the Military Medical Department; Lt. Col. James McAden, U.S. Defense Attaché, and Colonel Patrick Utez, Marine Forces Pacific.
This four-day planning workshop provides an opportunity for senior Lao civilian and military health planners from the national level to coordinate on Pandemic Influenza Response with provincial civilian and military officials from seven southern provinces of Laos—Champassak, Attapeu, Sekong, Salavanh, Savannakhet, Khammouane and Bolikhamsay.
This workshop is a comprehensive course focused on Pandemic Influenza, and is entitled “Societal Disaster Planning, Response and Recovery”. The concept for this event is to integrate Lao national pandemic planning with provincial and district planning in the southern provinces, to ensure these provinces are prepares to cope with a possible infectious disease pandemic.
The workshop utilized recognized subject matter experts to present up to date information on the current infectious disease situation in Lao PDR and the region. Those presentations were followed by table top exercises and case studies that provide participants an opportunity to share information and experiences that have been accumulated during recent pandemic events, from the national to the local levels, within the Lao PDR.
Fifty-two participants from the southern provinces of Laos attended the workshop.
The event took place at the Champassak Grand Hotel, Pakse District, Champasak Province.
This Pandemic Influenza Civil-Military Planning Workshop is a follow on the successful Multinational Pandemic Influenza Civil-Military Planning Workshop held at Lao Plaza Hotel in Vientiane, Lao PDR in April 2010, and a previous Pandemic Influenza Civil-Military Planning Workshop in Luang Prabang in November, 2008.
