Ending class-based education system must for swift progress
Karachi (PPI) - The class-based education system in Pakistan is the mother of all evils facing the nation and country and it is high time to do away with this remnant of British colonial era and instead introduce a uniform education system in the whole Pakistan.
This was said by Central President Pakistan Teachers Organization Mian Mohammed Akram and Secretary General Professor Dr. Izhar-ul-Haq. They regretted that the government was spending peanuts on vital education sector which was a cruel joke with the nation. They demanded to allocate at least 7percent of the national budget to education, so as to ensure a rapid socioeconomic change in the country.
They said declaring the year 2011 as year for education is commendable but a country where 25 million children are deprived of schooling facility require revolutionary steps and not just lip-service
They said that holding just two or three education conferences in five-star hotels are not enough for bring any change in our education system, but it requires serious and solid planning at both short-term and long-term basis.
They regretted majority of government-run schools are deprived of basic facilities of furniture, water, electricity and toilets. They said how we could produce an educated generation without improving the vital primary schooling system. They said without bettering the government-run schools in rural areas the dream of an educated Pakistan could never be materialized.
They demanded of the government to provide basic facilities in government schools, especially in rural areas, on priority and allocate special package for them.
The teacher leaders said that legislation should be made and implemented to declare primary education compulsory for every citizen.
They said that an extensive network of educational institutes should be established in both rural and urban areas. They said the whole education system should be based on our national language Urdu, besides promoting regional languages. They said reliance on English should be shunned and instead Urdu be used as the sole official and educational language.
They advised to introduce uniform curriculum all over the country. They said that for appointment of teachers at university level the minimum benchmark should be a doctorate degree in the respective subject.
He said that research culture should be promoted in colleges and universities. They said that nominal fee structure should be introduced in the government-run colleges and universities to help poor parents educating their sons and daughters. They said a new national education policy should be chalked out based on the cannon of Islamic ideology so as to meet our national needs.
