Promote women’s employment
VIENTIANE,MARCH 23 (KPL)- The World Bank, the National University of Laos and Pakpasak Technical College have signed the term of engagement to promote the women’s and youth employment.
Two career centers will be established in the main campuses of the mentioned education institutes where unemployed and recently graduated young women will receive service such as work readiness skills, career advice and links to internship and employment opportunities in the private sector.
Helping adolescent girls in developing countries transition from school to work is not always easy and seldom tops a government’s list of priorities. In order to promote transition of adolescent girls and young women from school to productive employment.
The AGI was launched in 2008 as part of the Bank’s Group Gender Action Plan-Gender Equality as Smart Economics. Delegations from the Young Entrepreneur Association and Lao Youth Union participated in the launch events and made a memorable contribution.
Since then the World Bank has been working on mobilizing resources to launch the initiative in the Lao PDR.
The initiative co-founded between the World Bank and AusAID includes two main components ‘the first’ promote a culture of youth entrepreneurship, especially in women, using a ‘market-place’ model which identifies strong business ideas and supports young entrepreneurs with business skills training, mentorship and seed grants.
The second is provide unemployed and recently graduated young women with job placement services, including work readiness skills, career advice and links to internship and employment opportunities in the private sector.
The initiative will be implemented over a two year period between 2011 and 2012 in three provincial capitals (Vientiane Capital, Luang Prabang in the North, and Champasack in the South), and in the active private sector.
The term of engagement was signed in Vientiane Capital on 23 March between Ms Kelene Carlsson Rex, Senior Social Development and Gender Specialist, the World Bank, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sengdeuane Wayakone, Director of Planning and International Cooperation, the National University of Laos and Mr. Saykam Phanthavong, Director of Pakpasak Technical College.
