Doctors strike unjustified, illegal: Secretary Health

LAHORE, March 16, 2011 (PPI): Secretary Health Punjab, Fawad Hassan Fawad has said that strike by a group of doctors in government hospitals is unjustified, illegal and against the professional ethics and stern action will be taken under the law against the elements disrupting working of the hospitals and endangering human lives.

He was addressing a meeting of principals of medical colleges and Medical Superintendents of teaching hospitals at his office, here today. Parliamentary Secretary Health Dr. Saeed Elahi, Senior Vice President College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan Khalid Masood Gondal, senior officers of health department, Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Asad Aslam Khan as well as principals of all medical colleges and Medical Superintendents of the hospitals were present.

The principals informed the meeting that majority of doctors wants to serve the ailing humanity and is disassociated with the strike; however, some elements forcibly stop them from working. The meeting decided to issue show cause notices to medical officers and post-graduate trainee doctors inciting doctors to strike, creating hurdles for senior doctors in the performance of their responsibilities and misbehaving with them. It was further decided to contact parents of medical officers / women medical officers disturbing the atmosphere of hospitals, to take them into confidence about the situation.

It was further decided that College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan will be informed in writing about the misconduct of post-graduate trainee doctors and asked to cancel their registration and black list them. Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal said that under the CPSP laws, the council is bound to cancel registration and black list post-graduate trainees at written complaints received from Supervisors of PG trainees, principal or administration of the medical college.

Fawad Hassan Fawad said that besides safeguarding the interest of patients, the government will also protect the self-respect of senior doctors and no one will be allowed to take the law in his hand or to bring a bad name to the medical profession. He said that government is fully aware of the problems of doctors and making serious efforts for their solution.

He said that young doctors have also been taken into confidence in this regard on a number of occasions. Secretary Health made it clear that government is also taking steps for enhancing the salaries of doctors but it will not be blackmailed by the elements endangering the lives of the patients for their demands.
