Martial artists fall short of expectations in Beijing

Beijing (VNA) - Vietnamese martial artist Tran Thi Ngoc Truc lost to Cuba 's Montejo Daynellis 4-0 in the women's taekwondo 49 kg repechage at the Beijing Olympics on August 20, finishing seventh overall.

Truc, who replaced Hoang Ha Giang in the women's taekwondo 49 kg after she contracted a viral infection, was previously defeated by Thailand 'sButtree Puedpong 2-1 in the quarter-final the same day.

Before advancing to the quarter-final, Truc defeated Tona Theresa of PapuaNew Guinea 5-0 in the qualifier on August 20 morning.

In table-tennis on Aug. 20, Doan Kien Quoc, who ranks 222nd in the world, was out after the men's singles second round when he lost 1-4 to Russia'sAlexei Smirnov after 31 minutes of competition.

Although Quoc won't to further in the Beijing Olympics, he has accomplishedhis main ambition which was to make it into the second round.

Quoc defeated world No 52 Christophe Legout of France in the first roundin Beijing on Aug. 20.

Earlier, Quoc smashed Australian rival David Zalcberg in the preliminaryround.

This was the second Olympics for the nation's top player, who had failed towin a single match in Athens four years ago.

In track and field events, male runner Nguyen Dinh Cuong faced someimpressive rivals in the first round of the men's 800m competition.

His result on Aug. 20 was 1 minute 52.06 seconds, higher than his old recordof 1:50.26, but not enough to advance.

The coaching board of the Vietnamese track and field team didn't give Cuong any target, but urged him to try to break the national record of1:49:81 set by Le Van Duong at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The Vietnamese team, including 21 athletes, are competing in nine events including taekwondo, weightlifting, badminton, table-tennis, gymnastics,shooting, track and field and wushu.

Weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan on Aug. 10 won a silver medal for Vietnam in the men's 56 kg.-
