Women’s union holds handicraft exhibition
VIENTIANE,MAR 11.(KPL)- The Lao Women’s Union in cooperation with the Gender and Development Group organised a handicraft and agricultural product exhibition on 11-13 March at the Training Centre of the Lao Women’s Union, Vientiane.
On display and for sale at the exhibition are traditional handicraft items including silk items and agricultural products and food.
“The event is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the International Women’s Day, the 56th founding anniversary of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and to welcome the 9th Congress of the Party as well as the general election to the National Assembly,” said last Friday Mrs. Silikith Boupha, Director of the Development Department, Executive Committee of the Lao Women’s Union.
“The International Women’s Day finds its origin in the protests of women at the beginning of the 20th century, in Europe and the United States, calling for better working conditions and rights to vote. It was officialised by the United Nations in 1977, calling on each country on the planet to celebrate this day for women’s rights,” said Mrs. Silikith.
The trade fair is part of efforts by the Union in translating into reality the resolution of the Lao Women’s Union’s 6th Congress and promoting market-oriented production by women, according to Mrs. Silikith.
