VFI helps repatriate 113 human trafficking victims to Laos
VIENTIANE.MAR 09.(KPL)- One hundred and thirteen victims of human trafficking were repatriated back from Thailand with the facilitation of a humanitarian organisation Village Focus International last year, said coordinator of the agency Mrs. Keomany Soutthichak.
The majority of the victims are women and children, according to Mrs. Keomany. She said that the Village Focus International gave importance to anti-human trafficking efforts in southern provinces of the Lao PDR to reduce the number of people falling victims to the modern form of slavery.
The victims that have been identified and rescued are provided with accommodations, food, clothes, medical treatment and vocational training, according to Mrs. Keomany.
When the 113 victims were repatriated to Laos, five of them suffer severely mentally ill and one of the five was critically mentally impaired. At the moment all of them have been reintegrated into their communities.
Mr. Bounkeng Khounsavath, Head of the Inspection Committee of Provincial Education Service of Champassak, said that the government paid attention to combating against human trafficking at both regional and international arenas.
The Village Focus International is the first international organisation to be founded in Laos, according to VFI website www.villagefocus.org
