“Japan Week” to start today

Islamabad, March 09, 2011 (PPI): The Embassy of Japan will celebrate “Japan Week” from March 10-16 here at National Art Gallery (NAG), PNCA to depict the multi-dimensions of the Japanese culture, old and new. The “Japan Week” consists of Ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement) workshop and demonstration, a Japanese film show, a Judo demonstration and an inauguration of the exhibition “Passage to the future: art from a new generation in Japan”.

Mrs.Asifa Ataka, a Professor of Ikebana from Karachi will conduct the Ikebana workshop for the beginners and advanced classes from March 10-14while Ikebana demonstration and a certificate award ceremony will be held on March 15. Ikebana which literally means “flowers kept alive”, developed into a distinct art form in Japan in the 15thcentury and is now practical all over the world including Pakistan. Mrs. Ataka studied Ikebana from the Ikebana School, one of the leading flower arrangement schools in Japan.

The Japanese film “Fifteen” (GAKKO-IV) which depicts friendship between two boys in everyday Japanese life will be shown on March 14 at the auditorium of the National Art Gallery while Judo demonstration will be held on March1 5. The exhibition ’Passage to the future: art from a new generation in Japan”, an exhibition of Japanese contemporary art, will be inaugurated on March 16. This exhibition will present paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and video works by eleven young contemporary Japanese artists.
