Vientiane launches “Fresh Air” project

VIENTIANE,MAR 02.(KPL) -The Vientiane Public Works and Transport Service and the German International Cooperation “GIZ” have signed an agreement on the implementation of the Fresh Air Project for Smaller Cities in ASEAN region in the Lao PDR.
The signatories to the document were Deputy Head of the Vientiane Public Works and Transport Service Nouanta Hompathoum and the Project Director Roland Haas. Relevant officials of both sides witnessed the signing.
“At present, people in downtowns or capital cities in the Southeast Asia are facing traffic congestion due to the rapid increase in number of vehicles and the influx of country folks attracted by the wealth of the city and the economic development,” said Mr. Nouanta Hompathoum. “The increase of infrastructure construction and transport results in air pollution in crowded cities in ASEAN.”
“The project will begin with data collection on air pollution in Vientiane to evaluate the volume of air pollution in Vientiane. The project designed to make Vientiane a more environment friendly city is scheduled to complete in 2012,” said Mr. Roland Haas.
Vientiane is among 11 small cities in seven ASEAN member states having chosen by the project. This project is expected to help Vientiane fulfill the materialisation of its 6 slogans: peace, cleanliness, lighting, civilisation, lushness, and charm.
