ARREST OF TWO STATE EXECUTIVE COUNCILLORS SHOWS ACA'S EFFECTIVENESS - PM
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The detention of two northern Perak state executive councillors by the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) yesterday shows that the steps taken to improve the agency's capacity is bearing fruition, says Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
"Now the ACA is very active and I am happy with that, especially with the increase in the number of enforcement officers; its investigation capacity hasalso been strengthened.
"The increase in capacity has resulted in the agency becoming moreactive.
"What we are seeing at the moment is the result of (the ACA) mounting a closer monitoring than before. The arrest of the two Perak executive councillors is due to this improvement in the ACA," he told reporters after attending the 4th National Water Resources Council meeting at the parliament houseWednesay.
The two Perak state executive councillors from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) were among six people detained by the ACA on suspicion of corruption in connection with a RM180 million housing project in Seri Iskandar nearIpoh.
The ACA said in a statement Wednesday that those detained were alsosuspected of involvement in sexual corruption.
Abdullah said the ACA acted based on information it received.
"I know nothing (of the arrests). I was not informed, and it's not necessary to inform me. I only heard about it in the news... it is a matter for the ACA todecide, not us," said Abdullah.
