MOTORCYCLES SALES UP 20.1 PCT FOR FIRST HALF YEAR

During the period reviewed, 267,239 units were produced, an increase of 23.1 percent from 217,239 units in the first half of 2007, said Minister ofInternational Trade and Industry Muhyiddin Mohamed Yassin.
He said motorcycles with engine capacity of 125cc and below remained thepreferred choice, accounting for 85 percent of the market share.
"Currently, there are 120 motorcycle components manufacturers in the country. For motorcycle below 115cc, the share of local components account between 60 and 90 percent," he said at the launch of the automaticYamaha Nouvo LC model by Hong Leong Yamaha Motor Sdn Bhd here today.
Local components also account for 50 to 70 percent of motorcycles between 116 and 125cc but it is less than 50 percent for motocycles above 125cc, headded.
Muhyiddin encouraged Malaysian motorcycle manufacturers and assemblers to take advantage of the growing global demand as local exports remained smallcompared with the size of the global market.
"Demand for motorcycles worldwide is expected to rise at 5.4 percent annually to 55.7 million units in 2010. In the emerging economies of the Asia Pacific, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, motorcycles are seen asprimary family and work vehicles," he said.
Muhyiddin said Sri Lanka, Greece and Egypt were among Malaysia's major export markets for motorcycle while imports came mainly from Thailand,Japan, Indonesia and China.
Meanwhile, Hong Leong Yamaha Motor's managing director, C.H.Ng said the increase in fuel prices recently has further boosted the local motorcycle market where sales increased 22 percent to 51,000 units in June thisyear compared with 41,929 units in the previous month.
"Through the support of our dealers, Yamaha motorcycle retails sales in the first six months reached 98,663 units to capture a 35 percent market share," hesaid.
He said with the launch of the new Nouvo LC, Yamaha was confident that the automatic segment will enlarge to 20 percent from the present 13 percent with more customers beginning to appreciate the merits of automaticmotorcycles.
Ng said Yamaha, which has an 80 percent share of the automatic and scootersegment in Malaysia, expects to sell 1,600 units of new Nouvo LC per month.
