VIENTIANE,FEB 21.(KPL) - More than 50 government officials from ministries and public organisations have gathered at the 6th Ordinary Session of the International Co-ordinating Committee on International Economic Integration to oversee the improvement of laws concerned in preparation for the membership in the World Trade Organisation.
The ministries including Foreign Affairs, Finance, Planning and Investment, Justice, Public Health, Industry and Commerce, are in the process of modifying laws.
The meeting was held at the International Cooperation Training Centre (ICTC), in Vientiane on 21 February under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Thongloun Sisoulith, who is also Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The objective of this meeting was to review the amendment to laws of each relevant sector in preparation for the Lao PDR accession to the WTO and negotiations. They were also informed that some laws were not possibly for amendment at the previous meeting.
Dr. Thongloun advised that the Ordinary Session of the International Co-ordinating Committee on International Economic Integration should regularly be held to prepare for the accession of Laos into the WTO and for economic integration.
This was an ad-hoc meeting of the Ordinary Session of International Co-ordinating Committee on International Economic Integration to listen to the progressive improvement of laws of the relevant sectors, and other challenges.
He has called on the sectors concerned to pay special attention to the preparation for Laos’s accession into the WTO.
The Lao PDR is now well making progress in the preparation for WTO membership, trade negotiation, especially the negotiation of the two sides, which was held at the end of January 2010.
Laos completed the bilateral negotiation on trade with Canada and South Korea, in addition to signing agreements with Japan and China in 2010, said Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mr. Nam Viyaketh.
He has continued that Laos would negotiate trade with the European Union and Australia before mid-2011.
So it’s necessary for Laos to make progress in the multilateral negotiation and legal instrument improvement simultaneously, said Mr. Nam Viyaketh.
The MOIC is also closely working and assessing other existing issues in preparation for the 7th meeting of the working group, which is scheduled for mid-2011.
The upcoming meeting will focus on improving the laws on import and export control, consumption goods price, investment, tax, customs, crop sanitation and quarantine.
