MALAYSIAN KING WILL OPEN INT'L QURAN RECITAL MONDAY NIGHT

KUALA TERENGGANU (Malaysia), Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysian King Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin will officially open the 50th International Quran Reciters Assembly at the Islamic Civilisation Park, in Pulau Wan Man, here Monday night.

Terengganu State Secretary Mokhtar Nong said Tuanku Mizan will be accompanied by his consort Tuanku Nur Zahirah and Prime Minister Abdullah AhmadBadawi.

"This is the first time the international-level Quran Reciters Assembly is being held outside of Kuala Lumpur and about 80 male and female reciters from 49 countries will be participating," he told a press conference hereSunday.

Mokhtar said the best male and female reciters at the assembly, themed "Menjana Ummah Gemilang", will receive a cash prize of RM13,399 (US$4,000) each, while second place RM10,049 (USD3,000) and third place RM6,699(US$2,000).

He said the pavilion for the recital, developed by the Terengganu Works Department's architect, is divided into three components -- dome in the middle,cave on the right side, and Terengganu traditional building on the left.

Mokhtar said the cave resembles the Hira' Cave, while the four pillars inthe middle, wrapped with date fronds, symbolises the Quba' Mosque.

He said the green dome epitomizes the Nabawi Mosque, while the four-masts-with-two-storey-tower is the symbol for the tenets of Islam and piety.

An arch between the dome and the cave also epitomizes the HajarAswad.

Mokhtar said the Terengganu traditional building structure on the left side of the pavilion showed that Islam had long reached the state, while the park symbolised the obedience of the Muslims to implement the Islamic way of life to the extent that they succeeded in establishing an excellent civilisation invarious fields.
