No need for security pact between Iran and Iraq: Tehran’s consul in Basra
TEHRAN, Feb. 16 (MNA)-- Iran does not need to sign security pact with Iraq, Tehran’s consul in Basra said.
“I believe that Iran and Iraq can solve any problem that arises since they have amicable relations and there is no need to sign security pact,” Reza Nasir Baqban said .
“.... no security pact has been signed between the two countries and there are only economic agreements and memorandums of understanding and one old political agreement signed in 1975 and so far there has been no interest to sign any security deal,” the consul told .
The consul was referring to the Algiers agreement signed between Iran and Iraq in 1975 which was later annulled by the Saddam Hussein regime.
Commenting on sanctions against Iran, the diplomat said sanctions have had no effect on economic ties between Iran and other countries even the U.S.
Nasir Baqban also said the volume of trade exchanges between Iran and Iraq has increased by 30 percent and reached $5 billion which shows a significant increase.
