Subsidy reform plan should not harm working class: Iranian expediency council chairman

TEHRAN, Feb.15(MNA)-- Iranian Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani said officials should try to reduce the repercussions of the subsidy cuts on workers’ standard of living.

“The workers have always supported the Islamic system, so officials should make every effort to make sure that the implementation of the subsidy reform plan will not harm workers and wage-earners,” Rafsanjani said in a meeting with a number of workers on Monday.

The officials should take appropriate measures and protect the production sector because the subsidy cuts may force some producers to lay off their workers or close down their factories so that they can reduce costs, and it will create problems for workers, he added.

The subsidy reform plan went into effect in December, 2010. The plan calls for the subsidies on fuel, electricity, and certain goods to be cut over the course of five years. The administration pays cash subsidies for an undetermined period of time to compensate low-income families for the inflationary repercussions of the plan.
