Soc Trang zones 50,000ha for high-quality rice cultivation

Soc Trang (VNA) - The Mekong delta province of Soc Trang has zoned off 50,000 ha for high-yield rice cultivation by 2010.

Director of the Soc Trang Agriculture and Rural Development Department Truong Thanh Binh said that the area will be doubled by 2020, making up onethird of the provincial total rice acreage.

The plan is developed on the basis of the existing 30,000 hectares of high-quality rice in four districts of Ke Sach, My Tu, Nga Nam and Thanh Tri along the Hau river, with each hectare yielding between 5.3-5.8 tonnesof rice.

The official said Soc Trang has also draft plans to build farm produce processing industrial clusters and wholesale markets near the futurehigh-quality rice zone.

The province will need an estimated 7 trillion VND to carry out the plans.-Enditem
