Thailand to drive ahead national reform

BANGKOK, Jan 5 (TNA) - Thailand is gearing up toward national reform based on educational development for a knowledge-driven society.
Thai Education Minister Chinnaworn Boonyakiat acknowledged on Wednesday (Jan 5) his ministry's second-decade educational reform plans, emphasizing on providing optimal access to education for the underprivileged and further upgrading teachers and lecturers at all schools and other educational institutes across the Kingdom.
Chinnaworn said that the second-phased educational reform plans comply with and support the Thai government's national reform initiative announced by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva during his New Year's speech to the public earlier this week.
Regarding the emerging problem of early pregnancies among teenagers, the Thai education minister noted that his ministry is working together with all other agencies and parties concerned to materialise a three-dimensioned pro-active strategy to timely deal with the issue.
According to the minister, the strategy covers a nationwide no-sex campaign to create proper awareness on adverse consequences of the early pregnancies among teenagers and modified curricula, applicable to both in-class and out-class settings, to properly inculcate the local youths on appropriate behaviours, social responsibility and disciplinary ethics as a self immunity for the early pregnancies and for the complicated consequences; a nationwide campaign on safe sex with full-circled assistance provided to pregnant youths; and a formation of a 1,500-member network of state personnel across the country to look after students and youths in their respective areas where access to proper guidances is always available.
During his New Year's speech, Premier Abhisit announced that his "Thailand Reform Plan", based on months of countrywide data-gathering and brainstorming sessions, covers four major areas of enhancing economic balance, expanding social welfare, promoting access to education and improving the national judicial system--aimed to upgrade quality of lives of the Thai public, free the country of corruption and uphold nation-oriented good governance.
