Emission standards strictly inspected at Thailand’s largest industrial estate

BANGKOK, Jan 4 (TNA) - The Thai government is strictly inspecting air quality in Thailand's eastern Rayong Province, vowing to suspend investment projects at Map Ta Phut, the country's largest industrial estate in the province, if their emissions of detrimental substances exceed international standards on the environmental conservation.
Thai Vice Industry Minister Puttipong Punnakan said on Tuesday (Jan 4) that his ministry and other agencies concerned are jointly conducting air quality assessments in Rayong to measure atmospheric concentrations of volatile substances and chemicals, as instructed by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, and will suspend all projects at Map Ta Phut whose emissions of the substances or chemicals exceed the safe environmental standards, or fully impose mitigating plans.
Puttipong acknowledged that the official inspections initially focuses on 19 critical substances of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and that the assessments will also identify potential of the eastern Thai province to cater more specific investment projects within the safe environmental protection limits; while bringing the findings to the foreground for systematic planning on future greening issues in the country.
Emission figures derived from seven air quality monitoring stations at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate have initially shown that VOCs which exceeded the international standards include 1,3-Butadiene, 1,2-Dichloroethane and Benzene, while those which were within the safe environmental limits are Vinyl Chloride, Chloroform, Dichloromethane, Trichloroethylene, 1,2-Dichloropropane and Tetrachloroethylene.
The Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate was established in 1989 by the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand, under the Ministry of Industry, with its vision to reduce Thailand's imports of goods through the creation of domestic production bases while developing a harmonious industry circle in parallel with a safe environment and society.
