Thailand becomes the world’s 12th biggest automotive production base

BANGKOK, Jan 1 (TNA) - Automotive makers are speeding up investments to raise their combined production capacity in Thailand to 2.6 million vehicles a year, as Thailand has been the 12th biggest automotive production base of the world and will become the 10th biggest production base in the near future.
Wallop Tiasiri, director of the Thailand Automotive Institute, said that many automotive makers in Thailand already used their full production capacities. Some plants are operating around the clock and their production amounts exceed their expectations due to continuously growing markets. Automotive export grew by as much as 70% as the number of exported automobiles exceeded 900,000 last year. About 700,000 locally made vehicles were sold in the country and a certain number of automobiles were imported for local sales. The overall sales of automobiles in the country amounted to about 800,000 units. Last year was the golden year of the Thai automotive industry.
Mr Wallop said that the Thailand Automotive Institute expected automotive makers to expand their production capacities this year as they were using their full capacities. Consequently, the overall automotive production capacity of Thailand will rise to 2.6 million vehicles this year. In 2010, the production capacity stood at 2 million vehicles but the actual production was at 1.65 million units.
The director of the Thailand Automotive Institute, said that Thailand was the 12th largest automotive production base of the world. In the next two years, eco-cars of five automotive makers will be rolled out. Nissan has produced over 90,000 eco-cars. Honda will manufacture eco-cars in the first quarter of this year. Mitsubishi and Suzuki will launch their eco-cars next year and Toyota will follow suit.
“Of course, the progress of the eco-car projects will continuously raise automotive production in Thailand. Thailand will become the 10th largest automotive production base of the world in the near future. That will mean that Thailand will produce at least 2.5 million automobiles annually,” Mr Wallop said.
