DOUBLE TAX RELIEF PROPOSED FOR LOCAL, FOREIGN CARRIERS AND SHIPPING LINES
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Fruit Exporters Association has proposed double taxation relief be given to local and foreign carriers and shipping lines.
In a memorandum to the International Trade and Industry Ministry annual
dialogue 2008, it said as a solution to aircargo space, Malaysia Airlines (MAS)
or foreign carriers should be given double taxation relief based on the total
revenue derived from flying or carrying agriculture products.
"This will make the yield more lucrative for the airlines and encourage all
carriers to provide the airspace for Malaysian agriculture export," it
said.
The association said fruit exporters faced pressure in securing aircargo
space during peak period and risk losing the market for Malaysian tropical
fruits in Europe to products from other countries.
It said the government should also look into the possibility of reducing
landing fees or provide other incentives to make it attractive for
carriers to uplift agriculture products.
The association also proposed national shipping lines and other foreign
shipping lines be given double taxation relief to mitigate the fuel hike and
reduce their freight costs for export of Malaysian agriculture products.
"This will enable our products to be competitive in the overseas market,"
it said.
The association said shipping lines currently imposed bunkers adjustment
charge (US$509/20' and US$912/40') due to fuel price increase and have
raised ocean freight costs significantly over the years.
It also recommended agriculture allowance and tax incentives be extended to
fruit exporting companies involved in the marketing and exporting of agriculture
produce.
Currently, the allowance and tax incentives are only given to persons or
companies engaged directly in agriculture activities, it said.
Previously, five percent agriculture allowance on freight-on-board export
value was also given to fruit exporters for export of agriculture produce but
this incentive was abolished in 1994, it added.
