Unpleasant situations develop along Thai-Cambodian border

SA KAEO, Dec 31 (TNA) - As the Thai foreign minister asked Cambodia to free the seven Thai people in vain on Thursday (Dec 30), unpleasant situations are developing along the Thai-Cambodian border although both sides have not reinforced their troops there. Thai authorities have step up security measures along the border to prevent an activist group from protesting against Cambodia.
Thailand’s First Army Commander Lieutenant General Udomdet Seetabut talked to reporters before leaving for Sa Kaeo province to follow-up attempts to help the seven Thai people. He said that there would be a negotiation with high-ranking military officers of Cambodia at the Ban Klong Luek border checkpoint in Aranyaprathet district and he would try to create understanding and solve local problems as assigned by the army chief.
However, Lieutenant General Udomdet did not confirm if his visit would make any progress in the attempt to seek the release of the seven Thai people. He said there would have to be another negotiation at the governmental level. He added that both sides had not reinforced their troops along the border but they were monitoring situations closely.
At the Ban Klong Luek border checkpoint in Aranyaprathet district of Sa Kaeo province opposite the Cambodian town of Poipet, a small number of Cambodians crossed the border to the Thai side and border trade was not as lively as it normally was on holidays. Cambodians are afraid that Thailand may close its border pass, so they are too reluctant to enter the Thai side to do business. Some Cambodian people arrived to buy food and drinking water for their reserves.
Paramilitary rangers have stepped up their security measures in front of the Ban Klong Luek border checkpoint due to the rumor that members of the People’s Alliance for Democracy may gather to protest against Cambodia there. However, there has not been such a movement in the area.
Thai Defense Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon went to Chiang Mai province to preside over a firework event to honor His Majesty the King. There he declined to comment on the detention of the seven Thai people in Cambodia. He said it was the matter of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. (TNA)
