Laos-China railway construction to kick off next year
VIENTIANE,DEC 27. (KPL) - A hi-tech speed railway linking Laos and China will be constructed next year.
The plan for the railway track construction was discussed at last Friday’s workshop on the construction of Lao-Chinese railway, under the chairmanship of Standing Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad who highlighted the agreement between Laos and China on constructing the railway that the track would begin in April 2011.
The construction is to mark the 55th anniversary of Lao-Chinese diplomatic relation. The construction work will be completed in four years, as a part to mark the 40th anniversary of the Lao PDR. To ensure the achievement of the railway, many sectors namely energy and mining, agriculture and forestry, environment, land, and health, among others, should work together to ensure the safety, service and facilitation of the transport the equipment and materials for the railway construction, Mr. Somsavat called on.
He continued that this railway construction was a historic event for Laos and would bring benefits to the country and ensure the performance of socio-economic development.
The construction of the Lao-Chinese railway is a joint investment of US$7 billion, of which China holds 70 per cent of share and the Lao PDR takes 30 percent. The railway would be 421 km long, of which 190km will be tunnels and 90km long crosses over bridges.
There will be five main stations stretching from Boten (Luang Namtha), Oudomsay, Luang Prabang, Vangvieng and Vientiane Capital. The railway will be a part of the ASEAN-China linking which starts in Yunnan province, southwestern China, through Laos and Thailand to Singapore.
