Thailand conducts tsunami drill in South

BANGKOK, Dec 24 (TNA) - A new drill to prepare local officials for rescue and evacuation operations in case of tsunami was conducted in Thailand's southern provinces on Friday (Dec 24).
In Phuket, for instance, Tri Akkaradecha, the provincial governor, presided over an airborne and marine rescue and evacuation exercise to prepare local officials and rescue facilities for public evacuation in case of any tsunami.
The exercise was also aimed at providing local officials on knowledge for public safety and precautions and enhancing their rescue capabilities, as the past tsunami on December 26, 2004, caused great damages to people's lives and property in Thailand's southern Andaman region.
The exercise was organized on the 6th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami and Thailand's National Disaster Prevention Day as well. During the drill, officials assumed there was a quake measuring 8.5 on the Richter Scale on Indonesia' Nicobar Islands which sent a tsunami to the Andaman coastlines and there were a number of injured people stranded on islands, floating in the sea and trapped in felled buildings.
Rescue workers were mobilized to save affected people and open field hospitals to treat the injured people. The officials also operated rescue vehicles fully packed with first aid equipment and satellite-based communications gear in the drill.
Local authorities said that they believe the exercise will enable them to cope with any real situation, and that they find the exercise satisfactory in terms of their command, coordination and preparedness.
Meanwhile, the southern Songkhla Province organised a ceremony to mourn people killed in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami on the occasion of Thailand's National Day for Disaster Prevention amidst the solemn gathering of the local public and school children. The tsunami remembrance ceremony was led by Songkhla’s College of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.(TNA)
