Thai government mulls to lift emergency decree in Bangkok
BANGKOK, Dec 8(TNA)- The Thai government is considering to lift the emergency decree imposed in Bangkok before the approaching New Year festival.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva announced on Wednesday it is possible that his administration will revoke the state of emergency in the capital as a New Year gift to the public, as the national situation has been improving.
The premier said the government's consideration and decision on the issue will take relevant factors into account, namely arrests of people suspected to have involved in previous violent incidents and continued hunts for remaining suspects by authorities and preparedness by security agencies concerned to ensure social order.
The government initially imposed emergency decree in 24 provinces in April after the protest by the "red-shirts" anti-government movement had become escalating. Later, the decree has been gradually lifted and is now still in place in the capital city of Bangkok and its vicinity.
The emergency law empowers the military to take charge of security. The decree bans gatherings of more than five people for political purposes and allows authorities to detain suspects without formal charges up to 90 days.
Abhisit insisted that there has been no violation of human rights during his government's enforcement of the special law, and that his administration will lift the tough law once social order and public interest are secured.(TNA)
