Zardari for strong Iran-Pakistan ties

Islamabad, Nov 27, IRNA -- President Asif Ali Zardari has underscored the need for further deepening Pakistan-Iran bilateral cooperation in all areas particularly trade, energy, security, communication and infrastructure.
“Pakistan attaches great importance to its cordial equation with Iran and regards Iran as an important friend and player in the region,” he said while speaking to Iranian Interior Minister, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, the President office said.
Matters relating to Pak-Iran bilateral relations, mutual cooperation in various areas with particular focus on the promotion of trade and investment ties and rail and road links between the two countries, enhancing cooperation in narcotics control, Iranian assistance for rehabilitation of flood affectees and regional situation were discussed during the meeting.
The President appreciated the Iranian Government and the people for their generous support and assistance for the rehabilitation of flood affectees.
He also thanked the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for his recent statement of support to the people of Kashmir struggling for their rights.
The President while talking to Interior Minister expressed satisfaction on the progress made in strengthening institutional linkages between intelligence and security institutions of the two countries and expressed the hope that effective control of narcotics production and drug trafficking would contribute to peace and stability in the region.
He said that Pakistan and Iran face a common menace of drug trafficking across their borders and expressed the hope that a mechanism in the form Trilateral initiative (Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan) would help to counter narcotics trafficking in the region.
The President emphasized enhanced connectivity projects through improved roads, rail and air links between the two countries.
The President proposed greater barter trade between the two countries and emphasized the importance of communication infrastructure development for enhanced connectivity.
He also proposed setting up of industrial complexes in the border regions based on captive power and tax concessions for the mutual benefit.
The President while commenting on fight against militancy said that the whole region was facing the common enemy of militancy and urged adoption of joint strategy and mutual cooperation to curb violent extremism.
Mostafa Mohammad Najjar thanked the President for meeting and assured continued support of the Iranian government to the government and people of Pakistan in rehabilitation and reconstruction of flood affectees and curbing the menace of terrorism and drug trafficking.
Abdullah, Deputy Interior Minister, Brig General Hameer Reza Hoseinabadi, Head of the Narcotics Control Police and Mashallah Shakeri, Iranian ambassador in Pakistan also accompanied the Iranian Interior Minister.
From Pakistani side, those who attended the meeting included Senator Rehman Malik, Interior Minister, Arbab Muhammad Zahir, Minister for Narcotics Control, M. Salman Faruqui, Secretary General to the President, Spokesperson to the President and other senior government officials./end
