Javanfekr: IRNA to continue supporting OANA

Istanbul, Nov 26, IRNA -- IRNA Chief Ali-Akbar Javanfekr said on Friday that IRNA will continue our unflinching support to OANA to provide a robust drive to further advance the broad partnership among member news agencies.

'Before concluding, we would like to assure you that we at IRNA will continue our unflinching support to OANA to provide a robust drive to further advance the broad partnership among member news agencies and by further developing ideas and strategies to eliminate obstacles and current challenges facing our media industry,' said Javanfekr in an address to the 14th OANA General Assembly session (Istanbul, 24-27 November 2010).

Full text of Javanfekr's IRNA Country Report, entitled, 'Where and in what shape do you see your news agency in 10 years time?', is as follows:

'Honorable OANA President
'Respected Anadolu Agency President
'Distinguished Delegates
'Ladies & Gentlemen

'First, I would like to thank Anadolu Agency for hosting OANA General Assembly meeting in the beautiful city of Istanbul and also whole-heartedly congratulate the ninetieth foundation anniversary of the agency.

'I also express our deepest gratitude and warm wishes to all delegates and participants who have given their precious time to attend this meeting, and believe that this gathering has provided a great opportunity to exchange views and share visions that will further strengthen cooperation and partnership among OANA members.

'It is indeed a great honor for the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) of Iran which has more than 76 years of experience, to have made a significant stride among the new media of the present world as well as in professional gatherings such as OANA.

'Therefore, I take pleasure in presenting IRNA's country report on the theme of the General Assembly 'Where and in what shape do you see your news agency in 10 years time?' and the seven questions therein as follows:

'1) What kind of competition do you foresee for your agency in the future?
IRNA will encounter both internal and external challenges in future. Inside challenges include mushrooming of news agencies as well as tough and close competition among the news agencies in Iran. Even so, we welcome increasing of domestic news agencies as a means to expansion of information and promotion of knowledge.

'The rise of new media due to rapid spreading of cyber space mainly in the form of news blogs, news websites, and wide spreading of satellite news networks are but real challenges to IRNA.

'Our outside challenges include foreign news agencies and satellite news networks. Nevertheless, it seems that the most important factor in this competition is the time factor, diversification of information and penetration of the news due to rapid expansion of internet and recent technologies in the country and world-wide.

'2) Tell us about your current structure and possible changes you foresee for your news agency?

'IRNA is already changing from a traditional news agency toward a modern one and reaching to new phases. The changes are mostly in the field of technical and information systems and employing efficient staff with the emphasis on expertise and paying attention to the role of speed in disseminating the news and spreading overseas distribution network.

'3) What qualifications would you seek in your news staff in the future and do you foresee their roles and duties changing or merging?

'IRNA staff with regard to the forthcoming structural changes, require higher qualifications than their current and former colleagues, among which are mastering two foreign languages and the ability to use new information softwares and promoting their technical and information knowledge.

'The main task for IRNA staff will be redefined according to the development of the agency mainly in higher qualifications required for their jobs and deepening of their expertise.

'4) What kind of news services you intend to provide?

'As discussed earlier, with the development in cyber space and the emergence of pseudo-news agencies, like expanding news weblogs, social sites and satellite networks, increasing competitors and changing taste of users and audiences, IRNA needs to offer new services in order to maintain its current market.

'IRNA has targeted expanding its news services in the form of multimedia and reinforcing mutual contacts with the audience/readership expecting that we will be able to offer more various services compared with current ones. Increasing production of audio-video information and daily print bulletins.

'5) Do you think you will still be needed in your market in 10 years time?
Considering the fact that news agencies have their own audiences, we predict that IRNA will continue its career of meeting the needs of its audience at the information market along with other media in the next 10 years. This impression stems from the observation that when radio was invented, newspapers continued to exist and likewise when television introduced, radio did not cease to live.

'6) Will there be a need for the news agencies in 10 years?

'In light of globalization of information and the developments that took place in the cyberspace, there are serious competitors before news agencies.

'Therefore, it was predicted that news agencies will have less monopoly roles in the dissemination of news and information.

'However, as I discussed in the case of IRNA, the news agencies still will be needed in the future, because for providing comprehensive news, compared with other information devices that emphasize on speed, they will have the lead and this state will be maintained at least in the next ten years.

'7) What new strategies are you planning to survive in the news market?

'The new strategies for survival in information market includes further training, specialization, using new information softwares and systems, seizing opportunities in producing news, expanding cooperation with other news agencies in regional and international levels in order to exchange experience and knowledge and finding new ways to solve the problems ahead. Diversifying the news products could be one of the main strategies.

'It is also necessary that we transform our news agencies to modern media so that as part of professional training, we would be able to share effectively the knowledge about our activities, news quality, content and exchange of ideas.

'With training our staff about how report and write for websites, we can publish more beneficial content for our audiences, because most important mission of media is helping people to communicate.

'Before concluding, we would like to assure you that we at IRNA will continue our unflinching support to OANA to provide a robust drive to further advance the broad partnership among member news agencies and by further developing ideas and strategies to eliminate obstacles and current challenges facing our media industry.

'Thank you all once again.' /end
