PM consults senior officials on revoking state of emergency in South
BANGKOK, Nov 6 -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Saturday he had consulted with senior officials on a government plan to revoke the state of emergency in Thailand's southern border provinces.
Mr Abhisit said he had talked with Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, national police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree and Department of Special Investigation chief Tharit Pengdit on Friday on cases related to the ethnic Malay majority Muslim provinces which are pending in court.
Development in the deep South has advanced considerably, but the local people are still uncertain about the building of justice process, Mr Abhisit said.
He said the government plans to revoke the state of emergency in some areas in the troubled region and it was necessary for him to discuss with those senior officials before lifting the decree.
On Oct 19, the Cabinet extended the State of Emergency in Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and four districts of Songkhla for another three months.
The extension was the 21st since the law was introduced in mid-2005 to maintain order in the restive provinces.
More than 4,100 people have died since insurgency-related incidents resumed in Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat in 2004, with more complicated and more violent attacks.
The security law facilitates the operation of the security officials and allows them to detain presumed insurgents for an initial period of 30 days.
Touching on a warning by the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) that ill-intended people groups plan to cause disturbances from now until the New Year and they also plan to assassinate some important persons, Mr Abhisit said concerned agencies and he himself must closely monitor the situation.
CRES spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd on Friday revealed the information after the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) reported to a centre meeting chaired by Defence Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan that some groups are attempting to incite disorder in crowded areas.
The NIA also confirmed possible assassination attempts against the country's key figures. (MCOT online news)
